| There are many potential factors that go into which canine breed is most appropriate for a particular animal guardian or family. Depending upon whether a pet will be a family dog, hunting dog or show dog, would be the first question I would discuss with your other family members. There are certain breeds such as toy breeds like Chihuahuas, and larger breeds such as Dalmatians which may not be appropriate for certain families with young children. | ![]() |
Years ago when the movies 101 Dalmatians came out and the Chihuahuas became more popular after the Taco Bell commercials, many families went out and bought these dogs, only to find out that they were not the appropriate match for their families with young children. If one is looking for a hunting breed, than any of the Retrievers or Pointers are excellent choices in those who enjoy hunting and/or fishing. There are also issues of allergies to certain types of breeds of dogs that one with allergic family members need to ask about, as there are certainly breeds that are less allergenic to sensitive people than others. Large breed dogs often need much exercise to avoid becoming obese, as well as from helping preventing hyperactivity behavioral issues, while many of the toy breeds are mostly house dogs, and some can even be trained to use a litter box or certain type of pads in the home; thus never really spending much time outside.
Finally one should know of some of the more high maintenance breeds such as Chinese Shar-Peis or Bulldogs, which often suffer from chronic immune mediated diseases, especially chronic skin and yeast infections from underlying allergies. No matter which breed one decides on getting, it is important to do one’s homework first on the type of health problems a particular breed has, as well as whether that breed is appropriate for a given family or not.
