Bella Shares Her Halloween Costume
I really wanted to make a big splash with my Halloween costume this year. There was a really cute picture that we had seen on the internet that gave me the idea:
There was a cute spinoff on the same theme that I have seen also: two pirates carrying a treasure chest was really cute. I thought about two undertakers carrying a coffin….but decided to go with a PetMeds box instead and go as the “PetMeds Delivery Dog Team.” The challenge was on. This was clearly a costume that would require planning and a good seamstress because you can’t just go to the doggie costume store and pull this off the rack. Mommy is pretty good at sewing, but it was the pattern that was going to be difficult and she had to make one for me.
I knew how I wanted it to look when it was finished so Mommy just began to translate the idea into fabric. She started making the body suit first. My front legs had to be a different color than the back legs so this is the way the body suit looked when I first tried it on:
The legs had to be just the right length so I wouldn’t trip. Mommy kept modifying it until it fit just right and would fasten with velcro. Then we had to search for just the right size stuffed animal toy to be my PetMeds delivery partner. We found the toy Teddy Bear in a thrift shop, and he would have to undergo some changes:
The Teddy Bear had to be very lightweight, and be able to ride on my back. He was remodeled, and we were able to use his legs to make the fake arms that are in the jacket that I wear. Mommy found a jacket pattern that, with slight modification, would work for both the characters in the costume. She sewed a white collar on both jackets and attached a pretty bow at the neck and some contrasting buttons:
Here is what it looks like when I am wearing it:
The white box is a very lightweight gift box. Mommy made cut-outs on the front and back of it so it would fit on my back like a little saddle. The PetMeds logo was printed on sticky label paper and attached to the box. There is a strap that is attached to the box from the inside and fastens with velcro snug under my belly. The Teddy Bear just rests on my back behind the box, and all four paws that “carry” the box are attached with velcro dots to the box. Here is what it looks like when it is all put together:
I have had the most fun Halloween wearing this! I got to go to a cool Halloween Pawty and won a prize there, and I was in a fun contest in the Howl-O-Ween Pooch Parade and Pet Expo and won Best Small Pooch 2012!
This event is held annually by the Simi Sunset Rotary Club, to raise funds for Ventura County Sheriffs K9 Search & Rescue Team and Tiny Loving Canines (TLC). This year was the first year that Southern California Pomeranian Rescue participated with a booth with several dogs that are available for adoption
