Bayer Expert Care Quad Dewormer Chewable Tablets for Dogs

The joy and comfort of cuddling with your dog can make all the cares of the day drift away. Unfortunately, if you suspect that your dog has worms you should think twice before curling up with your pet…and not just because worms are ‘gross’. You see, intestinal worms can not only have a serious impact on your pet’s health but yours, too! It’s vital to protect the health of everyone in your household by addressing a worm problem right away. Remove the worm worry quickly with Bayer Expert Care™ Quad Dewormer Chewable Tablets for Dogs, formulated to eliminate the four most common types of intestinal worms from dogs in a single dose.

Can humans get worms from dogs?

The uncomfortable truth is dog worms can be passed to humans. The most common worms passed between dogs and people are roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Tapeworms in dogs are not readily passed from dog to human since these parasites are normally transmitted by ingesting an infected flea. Of course, if you accidentally swallow a flea carrying tapeworm disease, infection may result. This is why it’s important to always use flea preventatives to protect your pet and treat your home and yard to prevent flea infestation. Tapeworms can also be transmitted by eggs found in your pet’s stool being accidentally eaten. For this reason, children should be kept away from soil that may be contaminated by pet waste. Tapeworm segments also often find their way outside of your pet’s body and may be seen in the fur near the base of the tail. These segments may also carry tapeworm eggs and should not be touched by humans.

Dogs infected with roundworms or whipworms constantly shed worm eggs. If a dog infected with either of these parasites self-grooms and then licks you, there’s a good chance those eggs will be passed along. Because these eggs are undetectable, it’s possible for them to enter your body through your mouth. For example, your dog may lick your hand, depositing worm eggs on your skin. Then, you cough and cover your mouth with your hand, redepositing those eggs onto your lips. If you lick your lips or eat something, those eggs will find their way into your body.

When you were a child, did your mother tell you not to walk barefoot outside because you could get worms? Well, it wasn’t just a ploy to keep your feet clean. If your pet is infected with hookworms, the eggs are passed through fecal matter. These eggs then mature into larvae, which can live outside of a host in the soil for up to 2 weeks. Hookworm larvae can enter your body through your skin, usually through the feet. So, walking barefoot through the yard that your pet uses as a toilet could result in hookworm infection for you.

It is safe to assume that all dogs become infected with at least one of these types of worms from time to time. In fact, many puppies are born with worms. Dormant eggs and larvae become active during pregnancy and are passed from mother dog to puppies either directly through the uterine wall or later through the milk while nursing. This is why all puppies should be dewormed as soon as they are old enough, usually around 3 weeks of age.

How to tell if your dog has worms

While some symptoms of worms in dogs are easy to detect, others are more subtle and could be confused with many other illnesses. That’s why it is always best to bring your dog to the vet if you suspect he or she may have worms. The most common signs of intestinal worms in dogs include:

  • Hacking cough
  • Swollen belly
  • Dull, dry skin & coat
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy or depleted energy levels
  • Increase or decrease in appetite
  • Skin itching and scratching
  • Bottom dragging or scooting

In some cases, you may directly see worms or worm segments in your pet’s stool, vomit or hair around the anus. If you see or suspect your pet has worms, carefully collect a stool sample and bring it along with your pet to see a veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Left untreated, intestinal parasites may rob your pet of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Worms in dogs may also damage internal organs and tissues, cause severe anemia and even death.
