Pet Pool Safety Tips

Don't assume your pet automatically knows how to swim

If you are lucky enough to have a pool in your own backyard, you are probably already familiar with pool safety tips for your family.  Pool safety is important for your pets, too.  One of the best ways you can protect your pet is by installing a pool fence. The ideal pool fence should be see-through and be equipped with a self-closing, self-locking gate. You will need to fully close your pool gate at all times, as many pets are able to push open a partially open gate.  However, a pool cover alone is not enough protection for pets. Countless pets have drowned because they have crawled onto a pool cover which was not strong enough to support their weight.

Does your pet know how to swim? Most people believe that their pet “automatically” knows how to swim, and so they do not have safety measures in place around their pool. You cannot assume that your pet knows how to swim, and many pets find it difficult, if not impossible, to get out of the pool, and your pet may also panic once in the water. Another issue is that older pets tend to have less strength and are more prone to drowning. The same is true for different breeds; each dog breed has a unique body-type which will influence how well he can swim.  Make sure to understand your dog’s innate ability to swim.   At the end of the day, the best preventive measure is to simply make sure that your pet does not get near the side of the pool and that he understands that the pool is off-limits.

When people think about pools and pets, they assume that the main danger is drowning. But a pool is a danger to an animal in other ways. One of the biggest threats to pets is that they get too much sun and can overheat. Make sure that your pet has lots of fresh water available whenever he is outside. Watch your dog very carefully, and don’t let him drink the chlorine water, which can cause stomach upset. If your dog shows any signs of overheating like excessive panting or lethargy, make sure to take him inside immediately.

A great way to make sure your pool is safe is to install a ramp in your pool. A pet ramp makes it easier for the animal to get out of the pool if he gets into trouble. Make sure your pet understands what the ramp is for and how to use it. No matter how many other precautions you have put in place, a ramp is a great way to protect your pet. One of the simplest ways to make sure that your pet is safe is to install a safety pool alarm. You will be immediately alerted if anyone or anything, including your pet, falls into the pool.

  1. Pool glass fencing in Perth is great because I tried a fencing service from a known company there. I am guilty of thinking that my pet already know how to swim. Safety measures should always be observed even though our pet has already learned to swim. Accident is inevitable so we should always be on our pet’s side.
