Bella Celebrates Cinco de Mayo in her China Poblana

The holiday known as Cinco de Mayo — or  Fifth of May — celebrates  the victory in 1862 of the Mexican people over France.  Many people confuse it with Mexican Independence Day which had actually happened fifty years earlier.  Cinco de Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage more in the US than in Mexico, but whatever the reason, let’s have a pawty and and wish our Mexican furrends and neighbors a Festive Cinco de Mayo!  Mommy made my China Poblana, a traditional dress worn by dancers at Fiestas.

The China Poblana China Poblana is a traditional dress worn by dancers at Fiestas

There is a wonderful legend in Mexican history of the China Poblana, the traditional dress of the women of Mexico.  The style is attributed to a young girl brought as a slave from India to Mexico in the 1600s, and is credited with the inspiration of the  design of the dress.  The traditional china includes a white blouse that is often heavily embroidered, a skirt that is beautifully embellished and embroidered with sequins and beads and shells in traditional designs, a white petticoat designed to peek out from under the skirt, a shawl often made from blue and white fabric.  The China of today, worn at fiestas and in dance, is a bright and beautiful tribute to the historical China. Here is a picture of a China found in a current on-line catalog of Mexican clothing:

A traditional China Poblana

My China is made from one of my red dresses that has sparklies on the fabric, like sequins.  Mommy sewed a white ruffle to the hem to make it look like a petticoat, and then added the green ribbon.  Red, white, and green is a traditional color combination that is found on the Flag of Mexico.  I will be wearing it to a Cinco de Mee-ow and Bow Wow Adoption event at Petopia Animal Rescue this weekend on May 4th from 12 noon to 4 pm:

Bella will be attending a Cinco de Mee-ow and Bow Wow Adoption event

There will be several rescues represented with their adoptable pets: Valley Cats IncPrecious Paws, Petopia Animal Rescue, and of course Southern California Pomeranian Rescue.  So if you can come by to see me on Saturday be sure to tell me that you read my PetMeds blog!

Love, Bella
