[New Product] Advantus Oral Flea Treatment Soft Chews for Dogs

Find Advantus at 1800PetMeds

Oral flea preventatives have become popular with pet parents as a clean, safe alternative to topical ‘spot-on’ flea treatments. Giving your pet a flavored pill or soft chew to kill fleas quickly is much easier than applying an oily, messy flea preventative. Up until now, if you wanted to give your pet a chewable flea treatment, you had to get a prescription from your veterinarian. To solve this problem, Bayer created Advantus Oral Flea Treatment Soft Chews for Dogs, an over-the-counter alternative to prescription chewable flea medicine. These savory soft chews can be used safely as a short-term or long-term flea control option that doesn’t require a vet visit.

Drawbacks of topical flea treatments

If you’ve ever used topical flea preventatives to protect your dog from fleas, you know that the cautions and usage instructions can be daunting. Most instruct you to part the hair on your pet’s back and squeeze the tube to apply just enough of the liquid but not too much, as it could run down your pet’s sides. Precise placement is important so that your dog can’t lick it off, yet full effectiveness is ensured.

It’s also necessary in some cases to keep your dog out of the water for a period of time, and away from other pets and children after applying topical flea treatment. Another drawback is the possibility of adverse skin reactions such as burning, tingling, itching, redness or numbness. All of this may feel a bit scary and send some concerned pet parents searching for other alternatives.

Benefits of chewable flea medicine for dogs

The development of oral flea preventatives has been widely embraced by veterinarians and pet parents alike. Flea pills and soft chews are usually flavored so they are easy to administer and don’t require any downtime for your pet. There’s no mess, no need to isolate treated pets from the rest of the family, and no concerns about bathing or swimming.

What’s best about oral flea treatments is that they’ve been found to be 11.5% more effective than topical flea preventatives! Side effects for most chewable flea treatments are rare and not serious, consisting mainly of occasional vomiting or soft stools. Of course, these vary from product to product so it’s best to read the label or package insert for complete details.

  7. I have a mixed Mexican wolf and white German Shepherd. I have trouble grooming him because his fur is very thick. As a result of the fleas, he has hot spots and chews on himself to make his skin rough. It looks like a naked tail now. A vet prescribed antibiotics for the infection after I took him to the vet. His temperature was 105 degrees. Having only so many vet trips to afford, I am afraid his infection will recur. Please don’t let my dog die.
