Celebrate DOGust With PetMeds®!

Every dog has their day on DOGust First, the universal birthday for shelter dogs. To celebrate, PetMeds® is giving away a DOGust Birthday Prize Package.

According to the ASPCA, over three million dogs are taken in at animal shelters across the United States each year, many without records of their previous history, their past name, or even a birthday.

In recognition of adopted rescues and dogs currently awaiting adoption in shelters, dog lovers celebrate DOGust First on August 1st as a universal birthday for all rescue dogs. First coined by North Shore Animal League America (NSALA) in 2008, it’s also a holiday to raise awareness of dogs who are still in need.

Dog parents of rescues can celebrate by taking their dog on a special outing to their favorite park, serving up a favorite meal, or going on a shopping spree for treats and toys.

Rescue dogs in need of homes deserve to be honored too. Anyone can join in on the celebration by supporting a local shelter through volunteering, donating, or even adopting a new four-legged family member to give them the best birthday gift ever: a forever home.

There’s millions of dogs in shelters right now waiting to be adopted. Those who aren’t sure if they’re ready to adopt can volunteer to walk or foster a dog and might just meet their new best friend.

PetMeds® is celebrating shelter dogs by giving away DOGust Birthday prize packs to 4 lucky winners through the month of August. All dog parents are invited to enter for a chance to win by leaving a comment below.

  3. All of my dogs (4 total) are rescued. We have no clue when their actual birthdays are. We usually celebrate everyone in mid August when the last pup was adopted. We will be celebrating by taking them out for dog burgers and pup cups.

  4. This will be Oscar’s 10th birthday but the first year that his big brother, Otis, will not be here to celebrate with him (we lost him in December) so we’re hoping to make it special by getting him his very own pool that he can actually swim in. Oscar loves swimming so much that these involuntary, high-pitched yips bubble out of him every 30 seconds or so for the entire time he’s in the water (he sounds like he weighs 4lbs instead of the 70lbs that he is). We have a list of words we cannot say and every one of them is related to water & swimming so here’s hoping this is not the worst decision we’ve ever made!

  5. The paperwork for our current dog was not available. The best estimate is that she was born in September, so her day is 9/15. We are celebrating with her annul visit for vaccination updates and a trip to the groomers. She is overall a dog who brings happiness to others wherever we go, so one might say every day is a celebration for her.

  6. We take a trip to the shop where Ellie can pick out her own special chews and toys. She also loves getting to meet new people on her birthday outings. Then its back home for homemade treats and a day of playing.

  25. I didnt finish writing so this is to add on to my comment…My dog isnt a rescued dog but I have adopted pets from shelters in the past and if I decide to get another dog after Pepper leaves me the first place I will head is to the shelter first. It breaks my heart to see these dogs put down because they dont get adopted. You dont have to have a pure bred to have a good dog. Most of the dogs Ive ever had are what I call mutts or mixed breeds and my dogs have always been great pets
