[Giveaway] June is National Pet Preparedness Month!

June has finally arrived, and it’s time to make plans to soak up the sun with your four-legged family members. From road trips to shore side getaways, there’s so many fun memories to be made this summer.

In honor of National Pet Preparedness Month, here our best tips for keeping your pets healthy and happy on the hottest days of the summer. Plus, enter the Get Pets Prepped for Summer Giveaway for a chance to win a Summer Pet Preparedness Package for your cat or dog!

Pets Get Sunburned Too
For pets with white or light-colored fur, or those with spare fur on some areas of their body, skin protection on sunny days is a must. Pets can get painful, stinging sunburns, and they can also develop skin cancer from prolonged sun exposure.

Unless you have a Chinese Crested dog or Sphynx cat, you do not need to apply sun protection to your pet’s whole body. Apply a pet-safe sunscreen to areas with sparse fur, such as their ears, above their nose, and their belly.

Most made-for-humans sunscreen contains zinc oxide, which is toxic if ingested. We love My Dog Nose It because it’s safe, natural, and water-resistant. It also moisturizes while it protects, keeping your dog’s skin soft and healthy.

Water Is Good, Hydration Is Better
Have you ever drank a ton of water, only to still feel thirsty? Drinking a lot of water actually dilutes essential minerals in the blood, causing an electrolyte imbalance. For humans, an electrolyte-replenishing sports drink helps replenish minerals and moisture eliminated through sweat.

Cats and dogs should always have access to fresh, clean water. On hot days, especially on outings during which your pet may be getting a lot of exercise, it can be difficult to keep your pet hydrated. They may not drink enough water, or the water may be missing the electrolytes they need on a hot day.

Most pets enjoy fresh fruits like strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, bananas, and mangoes. They’re healthy and well-tolerated when given in moderation as a snack.

You can also give your pet plain yogurt or kefir, or bone broth. As with all “people food” treats, make sure anything you give your pet is free of added sugar, salt, and seasonings. 

Watch For Overwhelm
Everyone’s excited for warmer weather, and that may mean your favorite dog park is more crowded than ever, or your local downtown is packed with people and their pets. While friendly pets may say, “the more, the merrier,” most animals have a threshold for how much stimulation they can handle. Keep this in mind before you let your dog off-leash in a new area, as they may find it harder to listen to you when they’re overstimulated by sights and smells.

If your pet isn’t a fan of making friends in a crowd, try visiting your favorite hangouts in the early morning. For small pets, a stroller or carrier can give them a reprieve from a crowded or overwhelming environment.

  1. My Little Zackie’s summer plans are to enjoy the lake and the beach as much as we possibly can. Zackie enjoys boating and also playing at the beach and seeing all the other furfriends too.

  10. Our puppy is 4 months old and she is a black lab. Her name is Ellie Mae and we are currently attending puppy training classes. She has been swimming in her pool so far this summer, taking walks everyday and retrieving her ball.

  12. My 1 1/2 year old Damien is a Golden Retriever whom loves to sleep in ! Doesn’t love the heat but loves being outside so only for short periods of time she lays on his raised cot bed that’s off the ground in the shade and than likes to get in pool for only few mins after making sure the temperature is up to his standards ! It’s Damiens world .

  13. We have a New puppy, 10 year old senior dog and a new pool. Saftey is what Im most prepping for. I love my fur babies so much. Our new puppy is a small breed dog which we have never had before so learning what to do and not to do will be super important.

    I plan on building a cat garden so that my cat can go outside but remain protected

  16. The doggie package would be absolutely amazing for all of hank’s outdoor adventures. We go on daily trips to the doggie park & he loves going hiking.

  17. My summer plans are to enjoy the outdoors. For my cat, I plan to brush them to help them shed their winter coat. Flea and tick control are big part of my summer plans for my cat. Also, making sure they have fresh water and are keeping cool.

  18. Our dog Max, after a clipping to help with the summer heat, will have his “paws full” while keeping the neighborhood squirrels and rabbits out of our backyard garden!

  19. My Little Chuchi loves to meet the Mail Person daily. She runs up and down the fence line barking to say hello. Some days she even gets a treat thrown to her which she really enjoys so much. She also gets her daily exercise this way!

  20. Gumbo is a country dog and sticks close to our 6 acres. His summer plan includes chasing squirrels, voles, gophers, rabbits, his buddy. Ping the Cat, and the riding lawnmower. When Gumbo isn’t chasing anything that dares to run, he loves playing fetch or frisbee. He is prepared for the summer ticks, fleas, and mosquitos with monthly treatments of Inceptor and Credelio.
    Gumbo is MDR1 positive and those meds have not had an adverse effect on him.

  24. My cats have been hanging out in the garage in front of their humongous cat fan and ceiling fan. They also nap in the basement where it is cool.

  25. Definitely starting on her allergy shot and fleas meds to keep that itching under control. Hopefully a beach trip too!
