[Giveaway] June is National Pet Preparedness Month!

June has finally arrived, and it’s time to make plans to soak up the sun with your four-legged family members. From road trips to shore side getaways, there’s so many fun memories to be made this summer.

In honor of National Pet Preparedness Month, here our best tips for keeping your pets healthy and happy on the hottest days of the summer. Plus, enter the Get Pets Prepped for Summer Giveaway for a chance to win a Summer Pet Preparedness Package for your cat or dog!

Pets Get Sunburned Too
For pets with white or light-colored fur, or those with spare fur on some areas of their body, skin protection on sunny days is a must. Pets can get painful, stinging sunburns, and they can also develop skin cancer from prolonged sun exposure.

Unless you have a Chinese Crested dog or Sphynx cat, you do not need to apply sun protection to your pet’s whole body. Apply a pet-safe sunscreen to areas with sparse fur, such as their ears, above their nose, and their belly.

Most made-for-humans sunscreen contains zinc oxide, which is toxic if ingested. We love My Dog Nose It because it’s safe, natural, and water-resistant. It also moisturizes while it protects, keeping your dog’s skin soft and healthy.

Water Is Good, Hydration Is Better
Have you ever drank a ton of water, only to still feel thirsty? Drinking a lot of water actually dilutes essential minerals in the blood, causing an electrolyte imbalance. For humans, an electrolyte-replenishing sports drink helps replenish minerals and moisture eliminated through sweat.

Cats and dogs should always have access to fresh, clean water. On hot days, especially on outings during which your pet may be getting a lot of exercise, it can be difficult to keep your pet hydrated. They may not drink enough water, or the water may be missing the electrolytes they need on a hot day.

Most pets enjoy fresh fruits like strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, bananas, and mangoes. They’re healthy and well-tolerated when given in moderation as a snack.

You can also give your pet plain yogurt or kefir, or bone broth. As with all “people food” treats, make sure anything you give your pet is free of added sugar, salt, and seasonings. 

Watch For Overwhelm
Everyone’s excited for warmer weather, and that may mean your favorite dog park is more crowded than ever, or your local downtown is packed with people and their pets. While friendly pets may say, “the more, the merrier,” most animals have a threshold for how much stimulation they can handle. Keep this in mind before you let your dog off-leash in a new area, as they may find it harder to listen to you when they’re overstimulated by sights and smells.

If your pet isn’t a fan of making friends in a crowd, try visiting your favorite hangouts in the early morning. For small pets, a stroller or carrier can give them a reprieve from a crowded or overwhelming environment.

    My beautiful Yorker, Little will be spending her summer with me down at our summer cabin on the lake in northern New Jersey. What fun we both will have, grandsons included

  4. Will be keeping a close eye on my two cats for flea and tick problems and using topical treatments.

  5. My Australian Cattle dog/Welsh Corgi, Little Pup will be spending her summer chasing squirrels, meeting up with our box turtles wherever she finds them on our walks and greeting ‘Toadie’ every night on our midnight walks.

    Due soon for all vaccines. Health check up is ESSENTIAL to her overall health.

  7. Jack and Jilly get prepared for summer by having plenty of water around, keeping up with their flea and tick prevention, and having plenty of treats on hand!

  8. Buddy, Peanut, and Ella are summer ready. All their vaccines have been given to them and They’re waiting patiently to put their swimsuits and to go swimming 🐕 🐶

    they get flea and tick control because ticks are crazy outside and i keep water at all times they stay in the house with me because i worry about the heat and we walk in the morning and at night so its cooler

  10. I love grooming time with my horse – it’s a great time for bonding as well as good exercise for your arms and upper body. I like to switch arms often to give my left arm a good workout and it boosts your brain as well because using your off arm you are using parts of your body in ways your brain is not used to. LOL!

  11. My 3 dogs ( Ali, Harley,chewey) 3 cats. ( tubby , renzo, blacky). We will be staying inside where it’s cool. Only walks in evening. Maybe a little pool time at grandmas.

  12. The whole family ( my self my husband and 3 dogs are spending the summer in NC with grandkids and great grandkids.

  13. We are taking bonez for his first camping trip protecting with flea and tick meds will have ample shade and bringing plenty of water.

  14. Chance has arthritis, so he can’t go for long walks like he used to. We will likely stay close to home this summer. Will protect Chance from fleas.

  15. Sweet little overweight (thyroid disease) beagle basset hound mix rescued 6 years ago. The love of my life. We go to the lake , not as much as I’d like she hates the water but loves getting sand everywhere. Have an umbrella for her and of course water. But because she is overweight we stay hour hour 1/2. Never thought about sunscreen for her.

  16. Summer plans are to stay local but always be prepared. Bring in Florida, we are used to preparing every May to be ready by June 1st, the start of hurricane season! We’ve got our two tubs of hurricane preparedness ready! One for the hoomans and the other for the three fur babies. It has emergency supplies in case we need to evacuate immediately. Also all three carriers are always ready to go especially during this season.

    We plan to spend lots of time in the backyard and long walks around the local lake.

  18. My Fantastic Five have a baby pool with clean water every day, so they have plenty of water to stay hydrated and also to go swimming if they want to .
