Survival Guide to Puppy Teething

It’s certainly no secret that dog’s love to chew. That’s why there are thousands of chew toys out there, like the Kong Classic Dog Toy, to satisfy chewers of all types, especially puppies during their teething stage. For those enduring or about to endure the teething stage, here’s a quick guide to surviving the wrath of puppy teething.

At about 16 weeks of age, your puppy’s baby teeth will be gradually pushed out by the permanent adult teeth up until about 7-8 months of age which is when your pup will have all 42 of his or her adult teeth. This period of time is called Puppy Teething.  At this time, your pup’s mouth and gums will be swollen and in pain, which is what leads to chewing. Puppies will gnaw on just about anything that’s available to them because chewing actually soothes and massages the sore gums and can even help relieve some of the pain.

One of the best things you can do to survive the teething stage is to provide your pup with some safe chew toys. Giving them their own fun toy to chew on will hopefully keep your pup away from your couch, clothes, or toes. Putting chew toys in the freezer before giving them to your puppy is a great way to help sore gums. If you find some blood spots on the toys, don’t fret, it’s natural and will gradually stop happening.  Keep your puppy engaged and interested by rotating the toys. If your pup consistently dives head first for your favorite pair of shoes or the side of the couch, try and replace it with a toy of theirs. If that doesn’t work, try using a bitter spray that will deter them from chewing on your personal and household items.
