How well do you Know your Pup?

Besides his or her favorite toy and scratch spot, do you know everything there is to know about your dog? Discover your dog’s genetic makeup with the Viaguard DNAffirm Canine DNA Testing Kit and learn insights to better care for your (furry) family member.

If your dog is a purebred, you generally know what to expect of the genetic makeup and what traits your dog may have. If you adopted your dog from a shelter, it’s likely your pup is a mixed breed. While it is certainly easy to guess some of your dog’s personality traits as you get to know him or her, there’s no certainty of what you can expect. Testing your dog’s DNA can help you understand how to better care for your dog. Uncovering your pet’s breed ancestry can help you determine and customize your pet’s care to meet his or her nutritional needs and exercise and health requirements.

Know your dog from the inside out

All dogs have a unique personality. Some are timid and sweet, while others are wild and outgoing. These traits can be learned, but some stem from your dog’s genetic traits, like . Testing your dog’s DNA can help you determine your dog’s behavioral traits such as energy level, temperament, and trainability.

Unfortunately, some dog breeds are more genetically inclined to develop certain disorders and diseases. Hip dysplasia is very common in German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Bulldogs, Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Neapolitan Mastiffs, and Retrievers. Urinary Bladder stones are generally found in Dalmatians, Newfoundlands, Bichon Frise, and Miniature Schnauzers. There are many breeds that have various predisposed health issues, and knowing your dog’s genetic makeup can help you possibly prevent problems and improve your dog’s quality of life.

How big will your puppy get? He may be a tiny fluff ball now, but it’s possible he’ll triple his size in just a year’s time. The ability to predict your dog’s height and weight are vital to fulfilling his or her nutritional needs and ensuring he or she grows up healthily and happily.
