[Contest] Want to help your local animal rescue? Here’s your chance!
The start of November, for most of us in the U.S., means cooler temperatures and the beginning of the holiday season. November also brings a week dedicated to workers and volunteers helping animals in shelters and rescues across the U.S., called National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week.
National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week was started by the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) to encourage people to become better acquainted with their local shelters and learn how they can help. It is held each year throughout the first full week of November.
A 2014 HSUS study estimated there were 13,500 animal shelters, rescues and sanctuaries in the U.S. The majority of these groups are not funded by the government or any larger group; rather, they depend on community donations and grants.
We decided in 2014 to introduce a grant to help these groups with their lifesaving work, and the annual National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week Contest was born.
2016 National Shelter Appreciation Week Contest details
The 2016 1-800-PetMeds Cares™ National Shelter Appreciation Week Contest is granting $1,750 in prizes to three winning animal rescue groups, and we need your help!
The contest opened to entries on November 1, 2016, and eligible animal rescue groups can enter through November 9, 2016. To enter, a group representative must visit the contest webpage, fill out the entry form and submit a photo of the group.
Voting will then take place on the same webpage November 10-20, 2016. The group with the most votes will receive a $1,000 grant, while the two runners-up will receive flea preventatives for their adoptable pets.
U.S. animal rescue groups that rescue dogs and/or cats and have not won a 1-800-PetMeds Cares™ contest within the last year are eligible to enter. We ask that all submissions are done through the rescue group to ensure correct information, and limit entry to one submission per group.
How can you help?
Do you support an animal rescue or shelter in your area? If so, let the group know about the contest and urge them to enter! Then, be sure to visit the contest webpage November 10-20 to vote. Anyone 18 (or age of majority in your state) and older can vote once per 24 hours. Share the contest with your friends, family and community and ask them to vote as well!
Looking for other ways to get involved? Check out our article on how to help donate to an animal shelter for more ideas. And, next time you’re looking to add a pet to your family, consider visiting a local rescue group or shelter!
Finally, remember to thank your local animal rescue group this National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week. Animal rescue is a tough and never-ending job, and these people work hard to improve the lives of pets in the community.
Happy National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week, and thank you for caring about homeless pets!
