Bathing your pet at home is fraught with difficulties. Getting them in the tub, keeping them in the tub, and getting them out of the tub without soaking the floor or yourself in the process seems almost impossible. Then, you have to brace yourself for the inevitable “post-shower shake”, which always somehow feels like a little payback. Next time, be prepared with the Rinse Ace Super Absorbent Microfiber Pet Towel to capture all that water before it becomes airborne.

Home pet grooming tips

Even if you take your pet to the groomer regularly, there will certainly be times when you’ll have to keep up with some grooming tasks at home.

A few of the pet grooming duties you may need to tackle at home include:

  • Brushing teeth
  • Ear cleaning
  • Eye mucus clearing and tear stain removal
  • Nail clipping
  • Brushing & combing fur
  • Coat trimming
  • Shampooing & conditioning

Safety precautions when grooming your pet at home

While at first glance that list may seem fairly simple, there are some precautions you should take before jumping into any of these home pet grooming tasks.

For example, when brushing your dog’s teeth it is important to allow your pet to get used to the process gradually, especially if it’s the first time. Use a toothpaste that is specifically made for pets, as brands made for humans contain substances that can be poisonous to dogs and cats. If your pet has an aversion to toothbrushes, try using a fingertip toothbrush, but only if there is little chance of your dog nipping you in the process. If brushing your pet’s teeth is completely out of the question, daily dental hygiene chews could be the best solution to keep teeth and gums healthy.

Cleansing your pet’s ears can also be a challenge. Using an ear cleanser that is room temperature or slightly warmer may help ease the discomfort of ear drops or liquid being placed in the ear. Wetting a cotton pad and gently wiping only where dirt or debris is visible is a safe way to clear away anything that could find a way into the ear canal and cause infection. Never stick a cotton swab or other object inside your pet’s ear canal.

Caring for the area around your pet’s eyes must be done gently and with caution. Many pets experience a build up of mucus and “eye goop” due to watery eyes. Pets with white or light colored fur may be prone to tear stains. Keeping this area clean and dry can prevent excessive tear staining. However, you may wish to use a tear stain removing product to keep this problem under control.

Another pet care duty that requires an extra measure of caution is pet nail trimming. Letting your pet’s nails grow too long can cause pain with walking, but cutting nails too short can cause pain, bleeding and nerve damage. You must be careful not to cut the area of the nail that contains the blood vessels and nerves, also known as the “quick”. Use a nail clipper with a built-in sensor, such as the Quick Finder Deluxe to ensure that you are not too close to the quick when trimming your pet’s nails.

Even bathing your pet at home requires some cautionary preparation. Always make sure you use a shampoo and conditioner that is formulated specifically for your pet’s needs. Otherwise, bathing your pet could actually do more harm than good. Shampoos that are too harsh for your pet’s skin could cause itching, hair loss, and hot spots that can make pets miserable. Also, drying your pet well after bathing is important to prevent shaking chills and discomfort. This is especially true for pets with longer, thicker hair or smaller, more delicate pets that may catch a chill more easily.
