Cleansing your pet’s ears can also be a challenge. Using an ear cleanser that is room temperature or slightly warmer may help ease the discomfort of ear drops or liquid being placed in the ear. Wetting a cotton pad and gently wiping only where dirt or debris is visible is a safe way to clear away anything that could find a way into the ear canal and cause infection. Never stick a cotton swab or other object inside your pet’s ear canal.
Caring for the area around your pet’s eyes must be done gently and with caution. Many pets experience a build up of mucus and “eye goop” due to watery eyes. Pets with white or light colored fur may be prone to tear stains. Keeping this area clean and dry can prevent excessive tear staining. However, you may wish to use a tear stain removing product to keep this problem under control.
Another pet care duty that requires an extra measure of caution is pet nail trimming. Letting your pet’s nails grow too long can cause pain with walking, but cutting nails too short can cause pain, bleeding and nerve damage. You must be careful not to cut the area of the nail that contains the blood vessels and nerves, also known as the “quick”. Also, drying your pet well after bathing is important to prevent shaking chills and discomfort. This is especially true for pets with longer, thicker hair or smaller, more delicate pets that may catch a chill more easily.
