Do strangers somehow seem to know you have a pet even before you tell them? Could it be because you’re always covered in loose pet hair? If you’re looking for a way to minimize your pet’s excessive shedding, we have great news! You don’t have to live with a layer of loose fur on your clothes, furniture, and floors any longer. Discover how one simple change to your pet’s bath routine can help alleviate problem shedding and restore your pet’s naturally beautiful coat.

Causes of excessive shedding in dogs and cats

Some pets are born shedders while others may experience excessive shedding due to varying circumstances. Certain dog breeds are known for almost constant shedding. These include popular breeds like Golden Retrievers, Pugs, Collies, and Malamutes. Likewise, long haired cat breeds may shed more often than short haired breeds. If your dog or cat seems to be shedding more than expected, there may be an underlying problem that can be solved.

Causes of excessive pet shedding include:

  • Increase in exposure to sunlight or higher temperatures
  • Underlying disease or hormonal imbalance
  • Reaction to medications
  • Fleas, mites or lice
  • Allergies
  • Dry, itchy skin
  • Nutritional imbalances
  • Anxiety or stress

How to control shedding

If your pet’s shedding has become troublesome, there are steps you can take to minimize the problem. First, a trip to the vet may be needed to rule out any underlying health issues. Second, be sure your pet is up-to-date on flea and tick protection. The itching caused by fleas is only part of the hair loss problem. Flea saliva is a leading cause of pet skin allergies, which also result in itching, skin irritation, hot spots and hair loss.

Once you have ruled out disease or parasite related causes, you’re ready to take the next steps in pet shedding control. Upgrading your pet’s diet may help reduce shedding in dogs and cats. Proper nutrition will improve your pet’s health right down to the hair follicles. Hypoallergenic pet food and foods with limited ingredients can help reduce allergic reactions that often result in itching, scratching and hair loss. You can also introduce Fish Oil and Omega 3 supplements to help nourish your pet’s skin and coat.

Proper grooming with the right tools and products can make a big difference in the amount of hair that stays on your pet and off of your furniture and clothing. However, bathing your pet too often and/or using the wrong products can actually make the shedding problem worse. Bathing your pet too frequently using a shampoo that is not specifically formulated to stop shedding may cause your pet’s skin to become dry and flaky, which can cause itching and even more hair loss.

Brushing your dog or cat regularly with a specially designed grooming tool will not only help keep your home cleaner but also helps to prevent your pet from ingesting hair when self-grooming, which could cause choking, hairballs and intestinal blockage.
