[Sweepstakes] Enter to win: Healthy, Happy Summer Sweepstakes!

Food, exercise, and loving care are essential in giving your pet the necessary care to live a long, healthy life. Another less common, but just as important factor in caring for your pets is to get them checked out every year at your veterinarian’s office.  Sometimes this can be difficult due to the rising costs of pet care. Luckily, 1-800-PetMeds and Bayer have joined forces to give out free wellness vet visits to pet owners for the whole month of July! Enter the Happy, Healthy Summer Sweepstakes now for a chance to win a free vet visit for your pet!

Why do annual checkups for dogs?

Preventative care is the best care your pet can get. Taking your pet to the vet yearly, allows your veterinarian to make sure your pet’s vitals are good and that everything checks out well. In fact, annual checkups can help your veterinarian detect and even prevent diseases and other life-threatening conditions early on. Sometimes pets won’t show symptoms of a health problem, but your veterinarian could assess and recognize something wrong. It is especially crucial to discover a disease before it becomes untreatable.

Taking your pet to the vet for an annual visit is not only great for your pet’s well-being and longevity; it helps you save money in the long run. Annual check-ups allow your vet to give you a plan to keep your pet healthy, fit, and disease-free, as well as update any vaccines your pet may need.

What to expect at a routine vet visit

Annual check-ups for pets are somewhat similar to human check-ups. Your vet will want to do an all-around physical exam from “nose to tail,” and even check for any signs of internal issues. Initially, your pet’s temperature will be taken and then your veterinarian will check the eyes, mouth, ears, skin, and joints.

  • Eyes check: Your vet will check for any signs of corneal ulcers, cataracts, dry eyes, or glaucoma.
  • Mouth check: Your vet will look at the gums and teeth to look for signs of gingivitis, periodontal disease, or oral cancer.
  • Ears check: Your vet will check for any evidence of ear mites or infection.
  • Skin check: Your vet will search for any signs of allergies, fleas, mites, ticks, infection, or lumps.
  • Joint check: Your vet will look for any early signs of arthritis, hip dysplasia, degenerative back disease, and even cancer.

Additionally, if you vet sees fit, he or she may take a blood sample and administer any vaccinations, if needed.
