*cue the graduation song*
I am proud to announce that, through hard work and intense late night study sessions, Leo has successfully passed and graduated from puppy class! I’m so happy we did a puppy training class. It was definitely worth the money. Not only was it fun, but we learned a lot.
In addition to “sit”, “down”, and “come”, we were able to teach Leo “leave it” and loose-leash walking. However, Leo still needs a ton of work with loose-leash walking. He’s great at walking by my side until the wind catches a leaf, someone walks by, or pretty much any distraction that could happen, and he just bolts.
The one command that we can’t teach him is “drop it”. In class, he caught on quickly that if he dropped the toy, he would get a treat. That led to him not even accepting the toy and patiently waiting to be treated. Now, whenever trying at home, as soon as he knows what’s going on, he refuses to take a toy. When I’ve tried to catch him off guard, he doesn’t listen until I show him a treat.
We still have a lot of practicing to do to master these commands, and we’re considering taking the intermediate class. I believe it would be worth it in the end, but should we enroll him right away or wait a bit and continue practicing everything we learned in the puppy class?
