Leo’s 1st Vacation

Over the 4th of July long weekend, Leo went on his first trip! Usually, Leo has to stay behind in boarding, but this time we packed up the car with Leo and his luggage (his food and toys) and set off on the longest car ride of Leo’s life. We gave him some calming treats for the ride, but Leo wasn’t very happy about the ride, even though he’s in the car with me every day going to and from work.  We made one potty stop on the way and got in pretty late at night. As soon as we reached our destination, Leo was rejuvenated with excitement at seeing his extended family and his best bud, Oscar.

Throughout the whole weekend, Leo was head over heels with all of the extra attention. If he wasn’t getting pet by one of us, he was getting pet by someone else or playing keep-away with all of Oscar’s toys. Every time Leo would take another toy of Oscar’s, Oscar would patiently wait until Leo dropped it and quickly swoop in and steal it back. Leo was very happy to have Oscar to play with.

Leo was happiest when we were in the same room with him. Since we were in an unfamiliar place, Leo’s separation anxiety was at its max. Neither Erich nor I could leave a room without Leo following. We also couldn’t walk outside the door without Leo trying to fight his way out the door as well. Even with Oscar to keep him company, Leo did not want to be without us. During the night, Leo barely slept. He would fall asleep for a little bit but would get up multiple times to pace or listen to noises happening outside.

We didn’t Leo in the car the whole weekend, which he was stoked about. As soon as we were packing up the car to leave, Leo figured out what was going on and it took a ton of coaxing and “good boys” to get him to go back in the car.

As soon as we got home Leo was very content and almost immediately fell asleep in his “spot” on the floor next to the couch. It was one of those sleeps where his tongue was lolled out and his little paws twitched.

  1. You should take Leo on another short trip as soon as possible, and he will probably do better. After awhile he will know the score and be an old hand at traveling. He looks like such a sweetie.

Loved the story of Leo and his travels. Every summer our family of three plus my DOD Prince go to Florida. He always sits on the balcony. Cautiously leaning over to see down. So funny how he stretches his neck out so far. Never missing a scent rolling in front the Beach. I’m sure Leo had a grand time with his Humans. Sincerely,…traveling with our Pets!
