Finding the right treats for Leo was not a challenge I was prepared for nor was it something I thought would be a huge deal. I did know that I wanted Leo to have high-quality, healthy treats that didn’t contain anything artificial flavors or preservatives or fillers. Since we feed Leo Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy food and he both loves it and responds well to it, we got him the same brand treats. Finding treats that met my expectations wasn’t hard; finding treats that didn’t give Leo stomach problems was.
Leo has such a sensitive stomach, and the first time we learned about it we learned the hard way. The night after Leo’s first puppy training class, Leo had diarrhea in his crate and for the next couple of days. It was awful for both parties involved. We took him to the vet, of course, and he said it was most likely all of the treats we gave him in class (after ruling out any underlying illness or worms). After a few days of recuperating, Leo was back on track, thankfully. At the puppy class and at-home training sessions, we just decided to use his kibble for rewards so his stomach wouldn’t get upset again.
We still gave Leo those same treats and other ones since he liked them, but we just had to make sure not to give him too many. It actually wasn’t until I reordered Leo’s NexGard and Interceptor Plus and got the free PureBites treats sample in the package that I had found Leo’s new treats. He loved them, of course, and I noticed that the ingredients were just freeze-dried Chicken. Simple enough, right?
I bought a big bag of the Chicken breast bites and have been using them for training and grooming sessions and anytime I give Leo a treat (which is probably too many times, but he’s such a good boy I can’t resist!). Since switching to the PureBites, Leo has yet to have an irregular stool. Woo!!
