[New Product] Lantus Insulin
Type 1 diabetes is a serious disease that affects dogs and cats and if left untreated, can result in death. However, with the right treatment, such as a healthy diet and insulin, your pet can continue to live a fulfilling life. Lantus Insulin is a long-acting, injectable insulin that controls blood glucose levels in your dog or cat to help alleviate the symptoms of diabetes.
What is type 1 diabetes in dogs and cats?
Type 1 diabetes occurs as a result of sugar not entering the cells, causing other sources of energy (fat and muscle proteins) to make energy. When fat is used as an energy source, it releases ketone byproducts increasing the acids in the body. This can cause the brain to stop functioning and your pet can lapse into a coma. In addition, your pet’s kidneys, heart, eyes, nerves, and blood vessels can be damaged as a result of the high acid content in the body.
Is your pet at risk for diabetes?
Overweight pets are very likely to have a higher risk of developing diabetes as well as female dogs and male cats. In terms of breeds, there are no cat breeds that are genetically predisposed to develop diabetes. With dogs, Miniature Poodles and Dachshunds have a higher chance of developing diabetes over other breeds.
What are symptoms of diabetes in dogs and cats?
Signs of diabetes in your cat or dog may include:
- Appearing unkempt
- Acting lethargic
- Excessive drinking and urination
- Weight loss
- Lower body temperature
- Loss of appetite
- Cataracts (dogs)
- Weakness of the back legs
If you notice any of the symptoms above, consult with your veterinarian. Dogs and cats can be diagnosed with diabetes through blood and urine tests. A blood test checks the levels of the blood sugar (blood glucose) in your pet, and if they are regularly heightened by a substantial amount, your pet may have diabetes. Urine tests examine the levels of sugar or ketones in the urine, which are both indicators of the disease.
How is diabetes in dogs and cats treated?
Typically, dogs and cats are given insulin injections for diabetes treatment. Insulin consists of a protein that is destroyed by stomach acid when swallowed, which is why it is injected so that it can be circulated throughout the body in the blood stream.
Your pet’s diet may also need to be changed to encourage weight loss. The best diet for diabetic dogs and cats include high-protein, moderately fat, and low/no carbohydrate food. With the help of insulin, weight loss and a healthy diet, it is possible that your pet might eventually not need insulin.
