Daisy explores vertical territory for cats

Do you see the little smile on my face? It’s because I’m in one of my favorite spots, up high. In case you didn’t already know it, vertical space is important for cats. For our wild ancestors, a high place allowed us to escape predators and to survey our territory from a safe vantage point. Domestic cats aren’t limited to keeping four-on-the-floor, we’re agile and able to take advantage of many vertical surfaces. If you have a multi-cat household, having lots of different vertical spaces helps us all get along more peacefully even if you live in a small home. When my brother Harley won’t stop pestering me, I often seek out a lofty spot to get away from him. Come with me and check out some more of the vertical spaces I use to get away from it all …

Here’s one of my favorite, a multi-level cat tree! Not only is a cat tree fun to climb and scratch on, but it provides a great observation spot. I’m an excellent jumper and climber, and climbing is good exercise. Look, I’m even higher than the picture on the wall!

Even jumping down can be fun if your home is set up with easy access to different levels. Luckily my cat tree is close to the window which helps with bird-viewing and allows for an easy dismount. Follow me and let’s check out some more vertical spaces.

This thing is called an arm-war. I have no idea why it is called that because it’s just a cabinet to hold clothes and the TV and stuff. Anyway, this thing is really high! Sometimes I hide up here and no one knows where I am. You can’t see it but there’s a cozy blanket up here too.

I’m so cozy up here, I think I’ll just hang out for a while.

The last vertical surface I’m going to share with you is the trickiest one: this is the bed canopy.  This one is narrow like a tightrope, but luckily it’s right over the bed in case of a fall. I don’t go up there much any more, but  Harley loves it.

If your own home doesn’t have many easily-accessible vertical surfaces, do not worry! You can get something like these Refined Feline Cat Cloud shelves and put them almost anywhere in your home! They come in different colors and in a left- or right-facing design to fit almost any décor.

  1. Did you know that goats like vertical space too Daisy. We like to be up so we can see what is coming for us.

  2. Oh Daisy – something really bad happened to me when I was on the second floor of my three story ledge. I was sleeping and minding my own business when all of a sudden, I was pushed off the second floor and landed on the floor!

My bean laughed at me and said that I rolled over and fell off, but I was pushed I tell you, PUSHED!

Oh the indignity of it all!

Signed Buster – someone pushed me!

That’s very interesting, Pricilla. I wish I had some big spools to climb on like you have.

Luckily I am a much better jumper and climber than Harley so I can get away from him.
